What is Biodiesel?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
Biodiesel is a renewable fuel made from natural oils such as vegetable
oil, used cooking oil and tallow. The process is a chemical transformation
known as Transesterification. In our case, used cooking oil collected
in Wales is our principal source material or feedstock.

How is it made?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
The source oil is carefully filtered before being reacted under controlled
conditions with Methanol and a catalyst under controlled conditions. This
process breaks up the large vegetable oil molecule into three smaller
molecules, which is why Biodiesel is a thinner fluid than the original
vegetable oil, more like conventional diesel fuel.
Is it legal?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
Yes, The product you buy is perfectly legal. Biodiesel is manufactured
in full accordance with local and national authorities. When you buy it,
road excise duty and VAT have already been included in the price.
Is it safe?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
Biodiesel is non-toxic, biodegradable and has a higher flashpoint than
conventional fossil diesel. It can be stored in the same conditions that
are used to store conventional fossil diesel.
What do engine manufacturers say about biodiesel?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
The DFIEM (Diesel Fuel Injection Equipment Manufacturers) group released
a report declaring general support for the use of B5 (5% biodiesel blend).
In many cases, vehicle manufacturers have individually approved up to
B100 (100% biodiesel) on different models, with variations occurring over
time. We therefore recommend that if you want to use more than 5% Biodiesel
blend, you should refer to the manufacturer's handbook. Warranty will
be unaffected if you use it in line with the manufacturer's guidance.
Can I use it in my particular vehicle?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
In the first instance, consult the manufacturer's handbook, however there
are a number of very good websites you can visit in order to make your
own mind up. One such website is:

What about emissions?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
A study published by the DEFRA (Department of the Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs) showed that using even a 5% blend, some emissions such
as particulates are reduced. Biodiesel has less sulphur than Ultra Low
Sulphur Diesel on sale today, so emissions of toxic sulphur dioxide are
negligible.
How do I mix it?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
Biodiesel and conventional diesel can be mixed in any proportions. Bear
in mind that biodiesel can be slightly heavier than conventional diesel
fuel, so some agitation is needed. In many cases, adding Biodiesel and
conventional diesel to vehicle fuel tanks before driving normally will
be sufficient to mix the fuels. Larger quantities should be agitated to
ensure full mixing.
Does it help the environment?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
Yes. Biodiesel can help reduce our dependency on fossil fuels, and contribute
to the reduction in emissions of greenhouse gasses from fossil fuels.
Is it sustainable?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
By using oil that has already been used in catering as a major feedstock,
we are making sure that as long as the sun shines on fields of oilseeds,
we can make biodiesel from waste foodstuffs.
What changes to a diesel my engine are needed?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
None. There is no 'conversion kit' or second tank required but pre 1996
vehicle owners should check that i.e. their fuel pipes are of sufficient
quality. Pre 1996 vehicle owners can check this website by vehicle manufacturer:

What changes will I notice?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
You are unlikely to notice any difference driving with Biodiesel, other
than to your wallet. Some users may notice a slight change in the smell
of the exhaust fumes, depending on the proportion of Biodiesel in use.
Can I buy red (duty free) biodiesel?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
No, there is no tax-free version, similar to red diesel. We are required
to charge road use duty on all of our fuel. Agricultural and other non-road
users should consult the Revenue, customs and excise department to obtain
details of how they can reclaim the excise duty for off road use. We understand
from Customs and Excise that it is not permitted to mix Biodiesel with
Red diesel, so for the full off road rebate, we believe you would need
to convert to 100% Biodiesel or not use it at all.
I have plenty of used vegetable oil, can you collect it?
Written by Celtic Biodiesel
Yes, we will collect used cooking oil from any catering establishment . We do not charge for the collection. Please telephone or email to arrange collection.
